Single women buying homes

Single women buying homes is more common than you might think. In a more traditional setting, a woman would live with her parents until she got married. Women were conditioned to wait to purchase a home until they made that commitment with their husbands. Comments like, "Oh you don't want to ruin that experience. You should share that with your husband." Over the years, that type of house training told women that purchasing a home requires a man.

There are a lot of requirements to qualify for a mortgage, but testosterone is not one of them! I am not implying we need to burn our bras to apply for a mortgage. However, becoming a homeowner is all-inclusive. The market is wide open to all who qualify. To quote Shirley Chisholm, "If they don't give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair". Owning a home is empowering. We all deserve a place to call our own. We want to feel safe and reap the satisfaction of caring for ourselves.

Some things to consider:

  • Purchase a home warranty: You make one call or place a claim online with the warranty company. They will set up any repairs to your home with the proper professional. Who fixes a broken doorbell? Don't worry about it. You just put in the claim.
  • Lawncare: Not really feeling the whole cut the grass on Saturday routine? I don't blame you. Consider a townhouse or condo that does those things for you. Or maybe work lawn care service into your budget when deciding how much you want to spend at home.
  • Lifestyle: Find a home that works within the lifestyle you are currently living. Watch your commute. Do you want a community with a gym and an adult-only pool? Search for "your today" not how you want to live in 15 years.
  • Short-term solution: If you decide on a condo but don't think it aligns with your long-term goals, maybe set the goal to eventually use the property as an investment property. You may also want to consider a 5yr ARM. (adjustable-rate mortgage) This may decrease the monthly payment with a lower interest rate.

Women have their own career paths and goals. We should not be sitting at the kitchen table with our parents waiting on Mr. Right to ring the doorbell and ask if his future wife lives there so we can finally own a home.
